In 1881 he was a promoted to captain of a sailing ship. From 1897 to 1915 he was a captain in the Ward Steamship Line. Ferd was a passenger with his wife aboard ship Carrillo from Colon, Panama, on 4 June 1912 in New York City. He died from complication of diseases (arterio-sclerosis, interstitial nephritis, with diabetes, gangrene and merosis of right foot & leg) on 22 March 1915 at the age of 54 at his residence at 103 Park Place in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. He was buried on 25 March 1915 at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. Ferd on 22 July 1915 at removed to Woodlawn Cemetery, Somerville, Mass. Hannah S. Walker and Edward E.
