He registerred for U.S. Civil War draft on 1 July 1863 in Belfast, Waldo, Maine. He served in the military Co. H. 14th Reg. Me. Vol. Inf. on 15 August 1864. Benson was described as Complexion: Fair; Eyes: Blue; Occupation: Ship carpenter; Hair: Brown; Ft.: 6; In.: 1 on 15 August 1864. He sold a portion of lot 35 in the fourth division of lots (Ward 4) to Aaron N. Smart on 1 November 1869 in Belfast, Waldo, Maine. He died from an accident on 27 November 1889 at the age of 65 in Belfast, Waldo, Maine.^821,822 Benson was buried at Grove Cemetery in Belfast, Waldo, Maine.
